Time for Singapore to think about environmental pricing
Straits Times Forum 17 Aug 09; I WRITE in response to last Tuesday's report, 'Will you need to pay an emissions tax for your flight?'. It is heartening to hear that the civil aviation industry recognises the need to take bold steps to make itself climate-friendly. This is despite the difficulties it faces in setting an international rate for emissions pricing, due to uneven demand for such a scheme in different countries. However, if the International Civil Aviation Organisation is committed

Services sector expands in July; first growth since March 2008
New Zealand’s services sector expanded in July for the first time since March 2008, the latest BNZ-Business NZ Performance of Services Index (PSI) indicated. An increase of new orders over the month led the expansion, although this may be due to the seasonal effect of the end of winter, BNZ said. The July PSI score of 50.1 from 45 in June indicated a very slight expansion in activity in the sector over the month. A score below 50 indicates contraction, while one above 50 indicated expansio

The handheld cellphone in car ban
As widely expected, the Government has announced it will be an offence to use a handheld cellphone while driving. I’m disappointed by this decision, especially by the lack of evidence it will be effective. From November 1 it will be against the road rules for drivers to text or talk on a handheld cell phone while driving. The change is part of the Land Transport (Road User) Amendment Rule and will see drivers using handheld mobile phones receive an infringement notice consisting of an $

The Dawn of Real Estate in India
There is an apparent development in the infrastructure segment in India which can be easily seen through the current scenario of real estate India. Now most of the folks would say that there is a subsequent rise in the white collar jobs in most of the metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi and Bangalore. There is no exception there is an increase in the spending power of the middle class in India. Whatever amount of money an Indian is earning now he would surely be directly or

A Streetcar Named Homophobia
A streetcar dedicated to deceased gay rights activist Harvey Milk was recently vandalised, in the same week his nation honoured him. It seems Harvey Milk’s work isn’t done, and evidence of the homophobia that still exists is on the streetcar dedicated to him [above]. Servicing San Francisco’s F-line , Milk’s streetcar was defaced with the words “fag” and “faggots” several weeks ago. Taken in for repair this week, some are concerned that the vandalism wasn’t tackled sooner, considering the o

Berjaya Hills Resort Japanese Village
We had lots of fun with the rabbits and all the other cute animals at the Rabbit Park. It’s been quite some time since I last went up here, so I took my time taking pictures of the rabbits… they made perfect photography subjects. They were cute and simply lovely, and when I aim at them they just keep still until I click my shutter release button! Although it was during the festive season, the place was surprisingly not too crowded. After the rabbit park, we drove to the Japanese Village.

food in our tummies and a roof over our heads
Expecting to be picked up just before nine, we were cutting into our breakfast watermelon at a quarter to eight when the guesthouse staff apologetically announced at our open doorway that the bus would be coming at 7:30. Surprised at this mistake from such a competent English speaker, we soon discovered there was no error. The nine o’clock bus had been cancelled (by no means the first time we have experienced this, but a novel concept for the Hs!) and we were now booked on the 7:20. An urgent h

Why Blake's 7 is important for the study of idealism and terrorism
Some of you, of a certain generation will have heard of Blake's 7.That's hardly surprising as it is a British SF show made by the BBC in the 1970s that isn't aired much, and very few outside of Commonwealth countries will know about it. Be patient though, as after outlining what happens in the show (because knowledge of it is relevant) I will then cover what the title above is about later on.However, it does provide a fascinating study of the transition from idealism to fanaticism and terrorism.
