Muni Wi-Fi 2.0: smaller targeted networks, flexible business models
Glenn Fleishman has written an analysis of municipal wireless networking, tracing its development from large citywide “free” networks (which did not get built out) to smaller, more targeted networks (Minneapolis, Oklahoma City). I'm guessing that Congress will fashion some sort of financial package for the US auto industry, but before the deal is struck, it would be helpful to generations of Americans less aware of history to have two GM-related items put on the record. The first was GM's sabotage of its 1960's electric car. As the auto company pleads for taxpayer dollars in the billions to help it stay afloat in a period highlighted by its launch of the electric Chevrolet Volt, let's have GM acknowledge and explain wh

Can The Power Industry Bail Out Detroit?
Major electric utilities are mulling over whether to buy up—well, preorder—thousands of electric cars from U.S. automakers, reports The Wall Street Journal. Now, it's no surprise that utilities would love for plug-ins to become the future of transport—it means they can sell more electrons without having to build tons of new plants. (One federal study found that 73 percent of the nation's light vehicles could be recharged using existing infrastructure if the cars were plugged in overnight; doing

Today in Road Transport, 19 November 2008
More bad news for road transport workers this week, as Daf proposes to axe 250 jobs from its Leyland, Lancashire depot, blaming a dramatic drop in orders for new trucks. Following suit is fellow manufacturer LDV, which also plans to cut 90 production jobs. ZAINUL ARIFIN: Build excellence in national schools
WE must admit that our present education system is not doing our nation any favours, as far as race relations is concerned. In fact, we can even go so far as to conclude that it is working against national unity. Our Constitution, of course, guarantees us a variety of schools. There are now about 6,000 national primary schools, 1,200 Chinese primary schools and more than 500 Tamil primary schools. More and more non-Malays now send their children to vernacular schools — for example, nine o
